Most of his horns had the factory 3/4" valves. It's no big deal to add a rotary valve designed for a rotary instrument with a 19mm bore. That valve is .748"--close enough. Lots of horns are made with those valves, and I think VMI makes most of the valves for them. I'd expect them to be pretty easy to get.

In fact, lots of rotary tubas have the fifth valve before the first, and they have a bore of 19mm. But they are smaller after the valves (these are 4/4 horns), and they also are looking for a different sound concept.

But my Yamaha 621 has the fifth before the first, and it's a piston horn with a short leadpipe. I've never played a 621 F without a fifth ('cus they don't come that way), but I have played a C. I though the F was more open, but that may be just because it's an F.
