I know many have said that pulling slides is not needed, however, I politely disagree. I feel sme pulling is needed to put the tubing at the correct length of resonance or at least closer to it. I agree that the notes can be lipped in tune, but some resonance suffers. I remember seeing Phil Smith bend pitches minor thirds off of the open tones (Bb Trumpet: E on the bottom of the staff open slurring from G). However I seem to remember him still moving slides to correct intonation. I know the trumpet is different from the tuba in bore/bell taper and length ratio's, however the concepts remain the same. I feel that a lot of pulling is unnecessary, but some is definetely needed in some cases. It is best to set your slide at "comprimise" points which the slides are positioned to allow you to get most notes within 10 cents of target then pull to get the rest (hopefully only a few)in tune.
Good Luck,
Matt G
