With a small, cup-shaped mouthpiece and the right (wrong?) attitude, a Yamaha 621 F tuba will replace a bass trombone in a quintet more effectively than most other tubas. I have covered bass trombone parts with it before to good effect, but not the sort of bass trombone parts that go for the edge effect specifically.

Put the big, deep mouthpiece back in it and correct the bad attitude and it sounds like a tuba again.
