Well, Í use a mixture of sulphur dormant oil spray (available at garden supply centers) and lye, diluted in water. The color (all the way from black to a light yellow) can be varied by adjusting the dilution. Wipe it on, rub it in and watch the color change. Make sure that your horn is clean and free of fingerprints.
You can also use a solution of bismuth sulfide, available from art metal suppliers. Same idea.
