A saxhorn is one of a family of conical bore, valved instruments created by Adolphe Sax in the mid 1800s. The Distin family quartet has been credited for popularizing these instruments throughout Europe. Other makers then copied and began making saxhorns, including Henry Distin and Thomas Boosey. They were available in soprano, alto, baritone, bass, and contra-bass versions. Think cornet, alto horn, euphonium, Eb tuba, BBb tuba. The only difference that I can see between Saxhorns and their modern counterparts is that saxhorns were generally narrower and had much less of a bell flare. I have an 1870s Eb bass saxhorn that plays exactly like an Eb tuba. It is about 35" tall with a 12" bell.
