After just having spent almost $400 to have two tubas shipped to me for playtesting, and not liking either one of them, I'd say: BUY A PLANE TICKET to a city that has a BIG tuba store, fly in Friday night, play tubas all day Saturday, hopefully choose one, and fly back on Sunday. This way you wont' be having to take other people's advice on what to buy.
Just go for an internet special to NYC and play every tuba at Dillon's, or whatever "tuba city" is most convenient for you.
And if your spouse is not used to hearing tuba practicing for a couple hours every day....maybe not such bad advice to get a cheap-o until you find out if it can be tolerated.
