I have recently jumped on the wagon of a band who's principle tubist is a guy who studied with Gene for a while. He informed me that Gene, while being one of the worlds finest players, isn't all that great a teacher. I was also told that due to a percieved lack of gigs in the Chicago area (remember percieved), none of the big names really want anyone good around. Even if it's a student who's decades behind the teacher in his/her playing.
This is just what was conveyed to me.
If I were you, I'd hop on a plane to Switzerland and study with Bobo.
