When I clicked the websites of Baltimore Brass and Dillons, I found 13 tubas in the 5k and under range, all of which would be good horns for a college student. Perhaps you can try travelocity.com and fly to the east coast. It's probably a 4 hour drive between these two stores. Tubadad's buying his son a Hirsbrunner is great if you have the money, just remember that a lot of people like a lot of different horns, not all of them Hirsbrunners, and not all of them 10k+.
