That does make sense, for as you pull the tuning slide, you introduce or enlarge the gap between the end of the slide and the inner tubing. Where the gap is, and how large it is, matters. Some pro trumpet and clarinet players I've worked with had a set of spacers made of different lengths, so that they could insert the correct length for where their main tuning slide/joint was pulled, and have no internal gap. By equally pulling the upper- and lower slides, each gap is shorter and less likely to be at one of the nodal points where it would negatively affect intonation or response.
