"Pedal" is a very poor misnomer. The mis-named pitches are accurately called "fundamental" or "first partial" pitches, as these pitches consist of ONE sine wave (rather than 2, 3, 4, or more) vibrating in the defined column of air.
Again, I try not to let the word "pedal" slip out, and I try to use "fundamental" or "first partial".
