I was in a similar situation years ago in high school, only I chose not to bring
my CC to band because there was no good way to transport the horn without exposing it to
what I considered an unacceptable risk of damage. I practiced my private lesson material
at home on CC and played BBb at high school. It took about 6 months to get really comfortable with CC fingerings, but I never really had a problem going back and forth between CC & BBb.
Most serious students of the tuba are eventually going to need to move easily between instruments in multiple keys, so it's not all bad to start early.
