First bit of advice goes to any high-school students other than "Frustrated" reading this thread who want to purchase a CC tuba:

get your new horn, work a LOT of hours getting the fingerings at home for a week,
then take your horn to school and don't say anything. If you get the fingerings down, no worries. If you have difficulty, WRITE the fingerings in on your music in pencil...I KNOW this sounds lame, but think about it. That is STILL less lame than paying 4K+ for a new horn and having your instructor tell you not to use it! DO NOT under any circumstances try "switching" back and forth - it'll just hose your acquiring the new fingerings and you will likey make more errors during rehearsals regardless of which horn you are playing!

Now...my advice to "frustrated" : Use ONLY your CC tuba at home, practice twice as many hours as you normally do on it, DO NOT use the BBflat horn, follow the above advice and write the fingerings in in pencil if you have to, and tell your instructor that trying to switch back and forth will hamper your learning on the new horn and lead to more errors on both BBflat and CC. If your instructor is reasonable, they'll support you. If they still balk, get back to us!

hope this helps,

dp
