The problem with using wool is that with thinner high-gloss finishes, you're likely to embed the texture of the wool facing into the brass itself.
Formica might be good, but would need to be replaceable, as dirt would embed itself in the surface and tend to scratch anything.
Maybe a magnet with a high-gloss chromium plated face might do the trick.
