I was at a Boston Symphony concert in January, and between the first and second movement of the first piece, the coughing, throat clearing, chatting, and generally noise-making was sooooo loud. It sounded like everyone in the hall was making some sort of noise.

I also attended the NY Phil's concert of Mahler 3 in January. The conductor (not Masur--I don't remember who it was) had to wait quite a while between movements because people just would not shut up. Of course, the performance was top-notch. The opening with 8 horns in unison and Phil Smith making the most beautiful music I have ever heard out of the offs-stage posthorn solo were simply unforgettable.
