I have not had the opportunity to try the PT or Mira horns mentioned. Both may be really great horns. I have a Meinl Weston 2145 CC which I have used in a large community orchestra, and this horn does everything I (and the conductor) need it to do. I've loved this horn from the day it was delivered. Intonation is superb, as is its dark robust tone quality. It is especially good in the low range (I use a PT 50 mouthpiece). I was doing the Shostakovich No. 1 shortly after buying the horn, and those low/loud E flats came out clearly and easily from the 2145. I don't think a serious college-level player could go wrong using the MW 2145 for an all purpose horn.

The only caveat is that the big valve set is intimidating, and requires fairly large hands. If a player has smallish hands, I don't think this horn would be at all comfortable.
