Yes I was there. Say what you will about Boulez and his Notations, I grant you it can't be too many people's cup of tea, (I enjoyed it) but compared to the piece that opened the Walkure concert, it was an unassailable masterwork. Boulez, like him or not, is a pro and a trouper. Notations did not go over with indifference. Love it or hate it. Hearing it was like biting into a piece of horseradish. Beta endorphins to the rescue! No such sensations in that other piece. Mere boredom. No content. Utter incompetence.

On a related note, part of the problem with some orchestras today is the constant trivialization by overexposure of the certified great works, along with very low quality, high b.s. quotient new music. Jay and the FPO, as noted in another thread, are attempting some equilibrium in this area.
