"Ives, Stravinsky, Copland, Schönberg, Berg, Ravel"...I think these fellows have earned their spots in the repertoire because musicians, audiences, and plain-spoken composers (and not just brown-nosing associates) enjoy their works. When (compared to these) a relatively "unknown" has an opportunity to have a work performed in public, by a professional orchestra, in front of patrons who bought tickets, any potential tirades should be pocketed and discussed later in private with low voices. As much eyebrow-raising as occurs today involving government-bought art, those on the receiving end of the funds might tread a little more lightly to at least be better spokesmen for their colleagues.

And to be fair, I can think of many exceptions to the "rule" of government mediocrity in art. Just one such extraordinarily fine composer (as well as performer) that immediately comes to mind is Dr. Don Freund, who is currently teaching, composing, and playing at Indiana University. Then again, Indiana University's school of music isn't exactly an example of "government mediocrity", is it?
