Bass parts are written one octave above what they are supposed to sound like in the first place. Tuba players who read the bass parts out of the usual baptist hymn collections always transpose down 1 octave, or write them out like what you are doing.

If down an octae puts you out of range, then transpose an entire selection to a new key half an octave away, and then write the bass melody line in your range.
