Way back in the sixties, when I was in high school, our concert band would take a piece called "A Sea Portrait" subtitled "A Tone Painting" to music contest. This was the quintessential contest number. It's so beautifully written that even an average performance would gain a "1" rating.
I remember it starting with a trombone-tuba duet. Our director would keep his hands motionless in front of him and give us the downbeat by silently mouthing a 1-2-3-4 count-off. Of course, the view to the judges was that the music just started on its own.
Anyway, is anyone familiar with this piece? Do you know the composer and/or publisher. I've looked for it over the years and never found it. It's long gone from the archives at my old school.
Thanks.
