I know exactly what you mean. I think, at the risk of stereotyping, that a lot of the adults I teach haven't had the experience of playing or just being around much music in their younger years and they seem to have missing that sort of innate sense of timing and pitch, etc. that many of us take for granted, and it's just very difficult to break through some of those barriers despite their enthusiasm. But, on the other hand, I would take one of those over a underachieving adolescent any time.
