There are some cultures on this planet in which pitch is an important part of language. Learning to communicate requires the development of absolute pitch, and virtually all of the kids learn. I believe that being "tone deaf" and rhythmically challenged is usually a result of music deprivation in early childhood. Not just listening, but clapping and singing and beating on pots & pans are necessary for very young children.
