The earliest stereo CSO/Reiners from 1954 were first issued on Reel to Reel tape with the first stereo LP issues being issued between late 1958 and 1964. These early issues are among the most prized of the Reiners. That said, only the 1954 to about 1958 stereo recordings use minimal miking and two channel mixing.

Despite what you might think, recordings were edited and mucked about even before stereo. Many of Toscanini's recordings used multiple miking for monophonic sound. For LP playback, the edited recording is eq'd for the various LP playback curves such as RIAA. Reverb was/is often added even in the Reiner recordings to mask edits. Producers often assembled a rough edit of the sessions to the conductor for his approval. Many conductors were not often sound concious and were only interested in peformance details.

Old LPs which are only dirty and not scratched can sound amazingly quite when cleaned properly using a recording cleaning machine such as a VPI or Nitty Gritty or via discdoctor cleaners. Also having a modern line contact stylus on a quality cartidge, on a good turntable and arm will cut the surface noise amazingly.
