I've done this for an old King former-recording, a Miraphone former-recording, and a Conn 20J former-recording. I think those were 22". 24" is, well, two more inches...(??).

None of those now-uprights conk their players in the forehead, and they all "play".

The important thing is to simply find a trashed upright bell that is proportionally (size and taper) similar to the detachable recording bell plus its fixed stack. How far the somewhat-flattened bell flair continues to flair out past 20" doesn't seem to effect much. Heck, a 24" bell flare pointing "up" sounds about like it did pointing "out", except for the way the sound bounces around the room.
