The question of the ball getting stuck is interesting because simple reasons of geometry dictate, that the ball should be as close in diameter to the original diameter of the dented tubing as possible.

Still there is the chance to force an outward dent opposite the inward dent, if one abruptly forces the ball through the dented area.

That is one more reason to use barrels as Joe tells of, because their shape secure a better continuety of the original smooth lengthwise profile of the tubing.

For bell flare work I might imagine an appropriate dent barrel placed perpendicular to the bell radius and then made rolling by means of the magnet. That way a barrel can emulate a ball of a very large diameter. The pros of course have much better and more specific tools for that area.

One point of interest for me would be, if Dent Eraser type tools have been successfully applied to sore places as the knuckles of sousaphones.
