He was/is a fabulous player who's personnal demons got in the way of his career. I was at Saratoga in the 70's when he subbed for PK. WOW, he was incredible. He would have been the best that has ever been if he hadn't had problems. Please don't ask what they were, those who know will probably say, but I prefer to remember him as a vibrant, proud man who made more music on the tuba than anyone playing the horn today. IMHO.
