John bought the Holton, Vesuviuo II, Silver plated with gold bell 5 valved factory original, from Bob Tucci then of the Vienna Phil! in 1968-9 when John was in the BBC symphony. The tuba used by Mr.Tucci on the Decca/Solti ring cycle as can be seen at the end of the Vidio documentary of the Walkure recording. John took time off the orch to learn to play it! He then bought a couple of yellow brass 4 valve Holtons in the seventies. One was sold to Colin Young, then of the Bournmouth Symphony Orchestra. The other He alternated with a 5/4 Rudy Meinl as his Orchestral CC until 1987. This info is from Bob Tucci, Dennis Wick and an early pupil of John's, so I would think therefore credible. By the way I did say MOST of John's ORCHESTRAL playing was on CC. Not all of his career.
