Many (if not most) of the legato etudes (e.g. Rochut, Panofka, Concone) started out as vocalises, that is, sung with a slurred vowel sound. The instrumental versions simply continue this idea.

One gripe that I have with the standard instrumental versions is that all seem to leave out the accompaniment, which can deliver a huge amount of information about exactly what it is you're playing.
