When I went on my audition "spree" as I like to call it. I made two trips to every university, one during my junior year to meet people and take tours and all of that good stuff and one during my senior year to actually audition. I found that this not only helped me seem more social without effecting my audtion, but, meeting the professors early helped me get to know them through e-mail conversation throughout the year.
I know this may be too late for some auditionees and impracticle for others, but it's my experience.
