Part of the problem, and I believe that you see this is that in many states the course content requirements force us to teach more history and theory than performance. In my last teaching position, We had approximately 4 pages of required content on history for every page of performance standards. Many of the performance standards were basic repeats of former ones, with a little extension added.

Mechanical performance, such as learning note and rest values were dictated, with little emphasis on how to reflect emotion or feeling into the performance.

I know that many of us are looking for the magic solution for course content, but we are not there yet.
