That sounds like Jay Rozen, who as I recall removed his fourth and fifth valve slides, and inserted bells in them (one was a trombone bell, maybe the other a fluegel horn or something like that). He'd be halfway through a long, serious-sounding avant-garde improvisation, and then break into a traditional calliope vamp using all three bells--playing the off beats on the small bells and the oompah on the tuba bell. Of course, you never know what to expect at one of his recitals, except that you will laugh.
