A top marathoner may run 100 miles a week or more, but rest assured they didn't start doing that all at once. It took me three months to build up to 45 miles a week in marathon training, on a solid base of fitness. Now, I'd spend a year building up to that level. Of course, that 45 miles took me as long as the 120 miles of the competitive runner, but that's another story.

Sean is talking about what he did after he had built up to the point where a run at the pro ranks was even a recognizable potential. That's an unreachable goal for many of us who have been playing for decades.
