I would recommend the "Velvet Tone" mute by Humes and Berg. It is a "pot" that clamps onto the bello of the horn and it is filled with dense cotton. Gives a nice velvety sound and does cut down on the volume rather substantially without affecting pitch. They come in sizes to fit three different bell diameters.
Try it - if you don't like how it performs - send it back, but I think it might be what you are looking for.
