I think lots of us have done things similar. Back in the early 80s I bought a BBb York for $200 from a friend, played it for a while and decided I'd rather have his Reynolds sousaphone for $150. Later Michael Russel bought the York from my friend, added a 4 valve cluster to it, and played it regularly in the Seattle Sympony.
Mid 1980s I saw an add for a bass trombone for $100 in the local paper. It was a mint condition Selmer Largo so I bought it. Sold it to a teenage girl that I sort of had a crush on for $200. It for easily a $1000 horn.
Early 90s, gave up the oppurtunity to purchase a near mint BBb Holton 345 silver plated tuba for $5000 that was originally owned by Arnold Jacobs.
Sold my rebuilt York double belled euphonium.
