I think it is in a highly motivated student's best interest to study with the most experienced musical professional available in their area as soon as possible. A more experienced performer can help a student to NOT learn poor habits that so many do when they are learning an instrument without private instruction. They are in a better position to give informed advice with regards to musical interpretation, technique, practice strategies and equipment suggestions than someone less experienced or who doesn't play that instrument. A great teacher can do nothing but help a highly motivated student, regardless of age or ability, to progress at a greater rate and hopefully enjoy playing the instrument more. If the "orchestra player" is too busy to teach lessons or they would rather teach an older student, they would almost certainly be able to refer you to one of their more advanced students or colleagues.
