I hate using the word "serious" -- I mean, it's just music after all. There are far more "serious" situations in the world. Be happy that you can't lose a limb while playing music (usually, anyway).

One aspect that hasn't been mentioned yet is the experiences away from the horn that should be taught to a student. If someone can play their horn well, then that's fine, but life will be so much easier when they have an idea of what to expect from the kinds of people that they'll work with and the situations they'll find themselves thrust into. A wonderfully-playing instrumentalist who discovers that they can't stand the people with which they work or the ensembles in which they perform is just another unhappy employee.
