Having recently had one through the store (and setting it up while trying to instruct the amateur who bought it...he moving over from a 3V York EEb "monster - l.p./h.p.) it seems like the low G is the "pivotal" note on that instrument.

The 2-3-4, when the slides are set up well for most other pitches, is somewhat flat whereas 5-2-4 is somewhat sharp. My on-the-spot advice to him was to use 2-3-4 for brief-sounding notes and to pull out 5 and play 5-2-4 for longer-sounding low G's.

If I had an opportunity to play the instrument for a considerable period of time, my advice might change.
