I've found that it's very easy to neglect rotary valves and still have them maintain a decent (but not ideal) level of performance while piston valves will cause you problems immediately, thus forcing you to keep them well-lubed. Someone first suggested this to me on this board a few years ago and I think they were probably right. Having said that, as a jazz player, when I pick up my piston horn, I almost automatically start playing in a style that is more idiomatic of the trumpet (which I consciously don't study a whole lot), and I often end up trying to play more notes as well, so there is definitely a psycological aspect to this, at least for me.
