I have had a couple of big-bore Cerveny tubas which had short strokes but slow action. By changing the mechanical advantage of the linkage to make the stroke longer I was able to make the valves seem faster and lighter. The rate at which I can wiggle my fingers up and down seems to be independent of the stroke length (between 1 and 4 centimeters) but depends strongly on the mass of the valve mechanism. Anyway, I still prefer pistons.
