Now, there are certain F tubas that are designed to fail in respect to the low C. There is (was) one popular F tuba with a graduated bore, so that it would "open up" as more valves were added, however the fifth valve was before the first valve. This created a huge venturi effect right at the end of the leadpipe that made the low range impossible to center. After spending years working on it and turning white and starting to sweat if I saw a note anywhere in the part lower than a D flat, I said to h--- with this, and bought a Yamaha. There are times when you have to realize that you can't polish a turd.
