If I could only have ONE tuba I woudl get a large F (yamaha 822 type) or large E flat (Pat Sheriden's Besson type). I have used a Yamaha 822 for everything under the sun from solo work to dixie/quintet to orchestra and unless you are playing in a really big symphony, I think a large F or E flat would work well for you.
