You will get many replies to this question, and all of them will be questioned, second-guessed, and flamed by others since mouthpiece selection is such a personal thing. My way of looking at it is as follows: Rim diameter and shape are selected by your face for playability and comfort. Cup shape and depth affect sound quality most of all. Throatbore is chosen based on the cup size and depth. Backbore is chosen to interface with the physical properties of your instrument. Changing backbore while staying with the same cup and rim will allow you to get the best intonation and playability you can. Doug Elliot has a nice system for doing this, so my advice is to get together with him and learn a lot about mouthpieces while selecting some FINE equipment. NWD
