You've got to be kidding! Be a bigger a** than the other guy?!? That's why "hot shot" college tuba players have such a bad rep in community bands. Refer to Rick Denney's excellent post below. You don't gain anything by being "louder than he [is]" or trying to punish the band.
If you want to play in the band, play. If you don't, stay home and read a good book. You REALLY won't enhance your standing in the local (amateur) music scene by being a dork.
