Weril produces a nice little four valve based on the yamaha 621. From what i hear the biggest difference is the 3 grand or so that you save. Cerveny also makes a small four (albeit rotary) valve tuba. I dont remember the model number, i am sure someone on the board knows.
These are both fairly small, affordable, and easy for a Middle Schooler to play and manhandle.
