I understand that Wm. Bell took Harvey Phillips with him to do circus band jobs, and said that you should never feel that any sort of gig is "beneath you". If someone does not wish to play anything else but in an orchestra, that is their perogative. As for me, I try to enjoy whatever opportunities that come my way. My German Band gig pays more per-service than many orchestras, has no rehearsals, and we typically get fed a gourmet meal, too. On my dixieland gigs, endless measure-counting doesn't enter into the picture, either. I enjoy playing the occasional orchestra gig, but by the time it is over I'm reminded that I'm glad it is not my only gig.
