Actually, I have done this many times. I think it comes from 3 years of playing rotary horns, where a lote of my finger would rest on the paddle. It does work, except my middle finger extends SO far over that I'm pushing BACKWARDS at a 45 degree angle, and so my second valve is quite prone to sticking when I play this way.
