I heard the Bernstein/CSO Shostakovich 7th live when they came to New York and did it the week following the Chicago engagement. I had a chance to discuss the whole incredible event with both Mr. Jacobs and Rex, who was there mostly to double up on the big tuttis. I hadn't heard about Rex going in on by himself for the "clean up" takes.
The performance at Avery Fisher was stupendous beyond words. And so it the recording, a real collectors item. It is still in print, a good sign. The Shostakovich 1st is all Jake all the time, and is filled with his unique toeprint.
