Years ago, playing Stravinsky's Symphony of Winds, I couldn't get the mute in quickly enough: no time to even tilt the tuba horizontally (from memory only a bar or 2 rest, and isn't it a GP?). I thought of having a friend stand behind me for the whole piece, maybe dressed all in black and with a black balaclava, but settled on using a wicker basket (the sort you get dried fruit in when in hospital) filled with cotton wool and wrapped in black cloth.

This is the first time I've admitted this to anyone: the conductor certainly didn't notice!
