This is the way he described it to me. Many people make a shift when they play the pedal notes, and in doing so can put a lot of "hair" or "zap" on the note. People in other follow-ups have described the physical manuever. What Gene told me to do was to make that "pedal embouchre" on the notes just above the open Pedal and learn to "pop" the non-pedal, albeit very low notes. It's hard to control and certainly isn't for people who faint easily, but it does work. What I find amazing is that he can do it on a note as high as a G. Most people I know have trouble controling the sound around Eb and E. that he can do this manuever on a G is absolutely mind boggling to me!
