A twelve year old may or may not have the jaw structure, and or strength in in the facial muscles to support the larger mouthpieces mentioned below. Also one must consider lung capacity to supply the air to the larger backbore. A beginner might just want to start out with a Bach 7 style mouthpiece. I also like the Shilke 46D. It is a smallish mouthpiece with a fairly deep cup. I used a 46D for quite a while myself (Yamaha 321) and found it to be quite satisfactory. As this student matures larger mouthpieces are definately to be tried and used.
