Another excellent post, Rick. I would like to add one additional thought which has little or no bearing on Allison's situation. I find that the better condition my chops are in, the less warmup I require to play at my best. When my chops are not so strong, I need more warmup. This can be quite hazardous. When I haven't been practicing very much, I may get warmed up and have used up chops occur at the same moment. This is not pretty.
